Mr. Barry Roger McCoig, 77, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.  He was born April 21, 1945, in Gaston County, a son of the late Silas Talmadge and Ruby Irene Paysour McCoig.

Barry was a graduate of Ashley High School in Gastonia, Appalachian State University, and earned his master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  He taught Social Studies, History, Geography, and Earth Science at Highland Junior High and Cramerton Middle Schools for 35 years.  Along with his wife and daughter, he also operated Travel Pros travel agency.  He was a talented musician, playing bass guitar, and was a founding member of The Original Spontanes.  Barry loved dancing, especially shagging which he also taught to others.  He helped found The Highland Jr. High Ramblers, an outdoor adventure club. He was an avid traveler, tennis player, and master story teller.  He was a member of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church.

Barry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra Christopher McCoig; daughter and son-in-law, Dana Anne and Joel Todd Wolfe; grandchildren, Mallory Jean and Jacob Todd Wolfe, all of Gastonia; sister, Gail Blanton of Simpsonville, SC; brother-in-law, Ron Christopher of Cherry Grove, SC; nephews and niece, Randy (Pam) Whitesides, John McCoig, Jr., Lisa (Nik) Yauilla, and Jeff Blanton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John McCoig, Sr., sister, Marjorie Whitesides and her husband Ralph Whitesides, and brother-in-law, Buford “Boots” Blanton.

The family will receive friends Monday, November 28, 2022 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

I am so saddened that we "and" the world have  lost Barry!  He was always beloved by so many!
